Protect Your Property from Deer

It is a common sight in western NJ and eastern PA to see numerous herds of deer bounding across fields and roads. Unfortunately, it is also as common to see deer munching away on juniper and yew, rhododendrons and prize perennials. For homeowners who have spent money and effort to attractively landscape their surroundings, the presence of deer has become a dreaded and expensive nuisance. Suburbanization and mild winters have more than doubled the deer population during the past decade. Although deer adapt easily, they ironically are creatures of habit. Once they have discovered just how delectable shrubs and other plantings are, and become accustomed to feeding in your backyard, they are extremely hard to evict.

Although covering each plant with mesh, commercial repellent, home remedies (Irish Spring soap, human hair, moth balls, etc.) or other repulsive fluids, may meet with limited or temporary success, most people who are serious about controlling deer activity on their land agree that there is only one really effective solution: FENCE.

A number of factors will determine the "right fence" for your particular situation: the degree of deer harassment that you are experiencing; the terrain; budget; what you find aesthetically acceptable; and whether there are other fence related considerations (e.g. a pool). Although deer can jump at least 12', a fence 7-8' high generally offers a very high degree of deterrent. The most popular types of deer fencing include graduated wire, chain link, high-tensile wire (7 single strands of wire connected to posts), ornamental aluminum, electric, and heavy-duty polypropylene mesh. Other fence types can also be adapted as deer fence.

For maximum effectiveness, deer fence must be properly installed, adequately maintained, and encompass the entire perimeter of the area to be protected. To invest in fencing your entire property without addressing your driveway is a waste of dollars.
