Types of wood and their attributes:
Spruce - The least desirable wood used in manufacture of wood fence panels. Has a life span of 5-7 years, depending on weather and ground conditions. Color of wood is white when new but will turn black through a natural process caused by fungus and decay.
Mixed Hardwoods - A variety of species of hardwoods that may be treated for the use of fence rails. It is not recommended that mixed hardwoods be used for posts. Ground contact will cause decay over a period of time. Life expectancy of mixed hardwood rails is 15 to 20 years.
Cedar - Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar are the most desirable cedar varieties for fence application. It has a natural resistance to termites and decay. Normally used for fence panels and/or post & rail applications. Longevity of approximately 20 years.
Pressure Treated Wood - A soft wood that has been impregnated with a chemical to act as a preservative. Southern Yellow Pine is the most treatable species of wood. Its porous fiber allows for maximum penetration. For best results, pressure treated wood should be dried before treating. P.T. wood is the most desirable for fence posts and panels due to its resistance to decay and termites and its overall sturdiness. Longevity of 30 to 40 years.
